Oddsworld was a sports portal that allowed users access to real-time information about a wide range of professional, college, and international sports. Besides breaking news and scores, users who securely signed up could view odds and money line information from dozens of different sports books. Woodbourne designed the interface, as well as the application framework and integration that made Oddsworld run in real time.
Users with WAP-enabled devices could get the latest sports odds at http://www.gettheodds.com/wap
This dynamic site had real-time feeds of sports news, schedules, scores, and game odds from dozens of sources. Approximately 50-100 feeds per minute, either in formatted text or XML, were channeled into a SQL Server database, on a Windows 2000 platform, for processing in real-time.
Numerous back-end procedures ran both as scheduled and when triggered to take the feeds, parse them, store them in multiple tables, and cross- reference this data in multiple ways to allow for fast dynamic display. Bringing so many diverse sources of information together was challenging, especially since most feed sites do not yet use the power of XML.
On the front-end, screens were created dynamically based on numerous factors - from user privileges, to user customization settings, to the timing of individual sporting events.
After bringing the site into production, we continued enhancing it. The additional technologies used included EDI, DTS, MTS, Active Server Pages and custom programming. Oddsworld has applied for a patent on the technology Woodbourne Solutions developed for them.
