Project: MDBeacon
Platform: Windows 2000
Database: Microsoft SQL Server
WebServer: IIS 5.0
Technologies: Microsoft Active Server Pages, Microsoft Windows Media Player, Windows on the Web, AuthorizeNet

Developed by Woodbourne Solutions and HealthBizNow, MDBeacon.com is a site designed for Academic Physicians to store, organize, share, and locate medical documents, slides (such as photos and x-rays), electronic powerpoint presentations, and videos. Because of the large file size of such media, it is invaluable to be able to store them on the web, especially when traveling.

One of the unique aspects of this project is the "Windows on the Web" technology we developed. Files and folders can be manipulated in much the same way as they can in Windows Explorer, with which most users are already familiar. This reduces the time needed for busy professionals to learn how to use MDBeacon.

Ease of use is an important feature of the MDBeacon site. Physicians can gather all the relevant documents together in one folder on their computer. They can then upload this folder to MDBeacon with a click of a button. All the content will be uploaded automatically, with the subfolder and file organization preserved. The content is initially marked as private, available for viewing by the physician alone. The physician can then select a group of colleagues to share the documents with, or make the information publicly available to the medical community of the entire site in just a few clicks.

The site incorporates a powerful Search feature so the user can locate an author, institution, or view the most recently posted public information.

The site allows a user to build Groups of Physician Colleagues they interact with frequently. For example, physicians can quickly create a Residents Group and add residents at their institution who belong to MDBeacon. Once the Group is built, the user can assign them folders that contain content. Email is sent to the Group members notifying them of the new content available.
